There isn’t one of us who wouldn’t like to live each day knowing we don’t have a ballooned payment waiting for us at the end of the month. There isn’t one of us that wouldn’t like to look at our house and know it is ours, truly ours. But for so many of us that goal seems more than lofty. Luckily there is a family like the Berzins (a.k.a. The Tiny House Family) that knows how to achieve such a goal and are now showing us how.

The Plan: Your Pathway to Mortgage-freedom is a ten-week online course designed to lead you through the process of redesigning your life so that you can live on your terms and not the terms of a mortgage. You’ll develop a plan (and put it in action!) based on your unique dreams, style, and life-situation, and you’ll find a community of supportive folks all in the same place as you—ready to make a change.

What folks are saying…

“Our tiny home is built, we are going to sign papers today for the lot, and it has our 900 sq ft home to renovate on it. We are going to live in the tiny house while we renovate the 900 sq. ft. home. Thank you guys for the push we needed to see it this far. Really, to see you do it has made all the difference. YOUR plan does WORK! I encourage everyone interested in gaining financial independence to follow Tiny House Family’s example.” – Edgar Etheridge

“This course is such a gift. Today, because of the encouragement I find here from you and the group, I am moving along in the direction of my dream.  It is amazing to see how setting my tiny course has given me confidence, courage, and hope. Every decision now points in the direction of a hugely tiny life.  Gone are the bitterness and self-pity, the feeling trapped by decisions past.  These days, I catch myself singing and clapping to “Happy,” knowing that “happiness is the truth.”  It feels solid and grounded, this happiness.  Everything that I seem to be giving up is bringing me closer to freedom. By letting us in to the truth of your experience, you have emboldened me to live my truth.  I wish I knew  bigger words than thank you…” – E.L., 56, Washington, D.C.

Simplifying your life and living from your truest intentions brings a level of contentedness and happiness that is the stuff of dreams. Imagine quitting the job because you don’t need to make that much money anymore. Imagine being choosy about the work you do. Imagine living in a house that you designed and built with your own hands. Imagine a community of friends who surround you to support your choices. Imagine if everything that surrounded you was there because you really wanted it there. We live this dream and we will lead you here. It is totally possible.

You’ve looked at hundreds of house plans. You sketch out plans on napkins, scraps of paper, paper bags, in notebooks. You dream of simplifying. You imagine how happy you’d feel if you didn’t live under the stress of holding so much together. Aside from just walking away, you have no idea where to start. You know that you would be much happier without a mortgage or rent payment and you want to liberate yourself from debt and despair. You imagine what type of work you’d do if you didn’t have to earn so much just to live. You imagine how much deeper you could breathe and how much happier you’d be if you could really live life on your own terms.

In The Plan: Your Pathway to Mortgage-freedom, you’ll develop a step-by-step plan to realizing your dream life. We’ll help you face your worries head-on and create manageable action-steps. When taken one at a time, your action-steps will lead you to the impossible. You will take the first steps right away! You deserve to live the life you love.

I’m Hari Berzins. I’m passionate about mothering, teaching, living fully present, homesteading, writing, budgeting, resourceful debt-free living, spending time and not money, relationship building, simple living, efficient homemaking, organizing, only having what I need. I like making big things happen on purpose. Sometimes big things are tiny things that lead to the big things.

I’m Karl Berzins. I’m passionate about being a dad, minimal-waste building practices, alternative systems, solo building, creative use of materials, simple and effective design practices, coffee, chocolate, saving money, doing it myself, being at home, and cooking. I believe there is a way to do anything and you find it by doing what you can right now.

We created The Plan: Creating Your Pathway to Mortgage-freedom because we’ve seen firsthand the power that setting clear intentions and taking slow and deliberate steps has to help you to live life on your terms. We’ve transformed our lives with deliberate spending and non-spending, through letting go of stuff, and really getting our hands dirty. We’ve seen our relationships transform as we created a life of less money-spending and more conscious time-spending. We want you to experience this freedom.

The Plan: Creating Your Pathway to Mortgage-freedom is a ten-week program. Each week of the course will bring you one step closer realizing your dream of a radically simple and happy life in your mortgage-free home. (Please note that the schedule may change slightly during the class to accommodate your needs!)

Weeks 1 & 2: Course Overview + Self Care + Your Dreams + Your Goals – In week one, you’ll get comfortable with the format of the course. We’ll get to know each other in a private Google Community. You need a solid foundation from which to make this revolutionary mind shift, so we’ll spend time discussing the importance of self-care and explore practices to cultivate self-love and patience. You’ll spend time exploring in detail your dreams and desires for your life. After all, you have to know your dream before you can go for it.

Weeks 3 & 4: Mindful Money –You will know for sure how much money you have and how much you spend. You will begin to shift your spending so that it aligns with your goals. You will start to get a clear idea of how much you can save. We will discuss budgeting and why it’s important and FUN. You will decide on a budgeting method. We’ll explore ideas for radical saving and in the process start living the simple stress-free lifestyle you crave. We’ll also talk about debt and strategies for knocking it out. We’ll identify areas where you are mindlessly spending and stop that. You don’t have to lead a boring life when you live on a budget, but you do have to make some big changes in perception.

Weeks 5 & 6: Downsizing + Organizing – In week three, we’ll share the strategies we used to move from a 1500 square foot house into our 168 square foot tiny house (our “temporary” shelter). We’ll help you answer these questions and more: What do I need to keep? What should I get rid of? How can I let go of my grandma’s China? Do I have to? What about my clothes and shoes? How can I possibly fit my wardrobe into a small space? How can I stay organized? You’ll have tasks in each area of your home and we’ll work on clearing the excess together.

Weeks 7 & 8: Community and Land Selection – Week four is all about finding your place in this world. Building a life of intention is about rooting yourself to a place and a community. Before you choose this place and your community, you need to explore your values when it comes to community and place. Once you identify your values, we will share strategies to help you find places that would be a good fit for you. (It might mean staying right where you are!) We’ll share our tips finding affordable land, and a community aligned with your values.

Weeks 9 & 10: Design and Permitting – Week five helps you plan your site. We realize you may not have your land yet, but the information shared in week 5 will help you buy the best possible piece of land for your homestead. We’ll discuss design options for your “temporary” shelter, long-term living in small spaces, you’ll complete tasks that will help you design your space around your lifestyle, we’ll explore outbuildings and their function, as well as considerations for site design—the sun, the lay of the land, etc. You’ll consider long-term plans for your “temporary” shelter. And start to dream up your main house. We’ll share resources for designing plans that will work for permitting. We’ll also discuss living in compliance with the building department and zoning officials.

Enrollment is now open for our Winter 2015 session which begins on January 24, 2015.
