Going DEET free with Liquid Net

by andrewodom on July 12, 2011 · 48 comments

I wrote a post just a couple of weeks ago about pregnancy and pest repellent. While I took no real position on the matter I did strongly emphasize that a DEET free product would be much more intelligent to use…for anyone! It didn’t stop comments and even complaints about my indiscretions regarding the use of DEET. The ultimate “try it I dare you” though came from a wonderful company that is both a sponsor of my blog and a good resource for gardeners and micro-homesteaders; Liquid Fence.

The Liquid Fence Company manufactures a line of innovative, eco-safe and cruelty-free animal repellents and lawn products, including Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent — the No. 1 selling deer and rabbit repellent in the country. I came across them through another blog, Jenn’s Gardening Spot. It was there that I told a story of my experience with garden rabbits and ended up winning a lovely prize pack. And thus began my love for all things Liquid Fence.

So back to DEET. Once I wrote the post I was contacted by Liquid Fence and sent two packages of Liquid Net all-natural insect repellent.

Liquid Net® is completely DEET free and is made from all natural, pleasant smelling ingredients like lemon grass, cedarwood, and citronella oils. Applicable by convenient towelettes, and pump-sprays that fit in pockets, purses and backpacks, the non-greasy insect repellent is easy to use and as far as I am concerned 100% effective. Now I won’t say that when I applied the repellent the insects just hovered around this bubble I seemingly wore. Rather, they just didn’t bother me. I am typically used to a little OFF! wherein I smell like a bad Boy Scout adventure and the more I sweat, the more they swarm. Not with Liquid Net though. I used the wipe to cover my arms, neck, and ankle area, and then truly just forgot about it. It was easy to though. After 3 hours outdoors working I still haven’t received a bug bit.

So let’s review. Liquid Net The Ultimate Insect Repellent is:

  • All Natural – All natural ingredients including lemon grass, cedarwood and citronella oils
  • Safe – 100% DEET free, safe for the entire family
  • Hassle-free - Long lasting and non-greasy
  • Smells Great – Natural, pleasant scent
  • Effective – In independent lab testing, Liquid Net actually outperformed common DEET repellents
  • Guaranteed – 100% Money-back Guarantee!

And now for the special treat. Today I am giving away 2 packs of Liquid Net (30 towelettes in each package) just for reading this blog and doing one (or more) of the following things.

  • Leave a comment on why you want to try Liquid Net
  • Share this blog post on Facebook being sure to tag facebook.com/tinyrev
  • Tweet this post using the hashtag #liquidnetrevolution
  • Sending me a personal email with your name, address, bank account number, and PIN (NOTE: This option is only a joke. Please do not ever disclose financial information to an unknown source.)

I can’t wait to hear some of the comments and then choose a winner (done so with the help of random.org). Contest expires July 15, 2011 at 5pm EST.

Think I’ll go with option #1 and leave a comment… lol ;) As soon as I hit the garden, I must have a sign slapped on my back that reads ‘Free Food’ – ’cause I’ve been gettin’ eaten alive! In my case, it isn’t a matter of wanting to try this product… it’s a need! Itch, itch – scratch, scratch…

I would love to try Liquid Net because our skeeters are the size of helicopters.  Even when there is no rain! :)  Plus I detest chemicals on my skin that my body can absorb.

  • Shirlene Baker

I have told no one yet but I too am expecting. I also live in soth Ga. with the most gnats you can imagine and mosquito’s. I am allergic to mosquito’s and whelp up pretty good. I love every minute in my garden with my hubby and kids…I am so interested in trying this product!

    • anotherkindofdrew

Shirlene, if you don’t win, we will send you some just because we believe in safe pregnancy’s and this stuff really is good. In fact, if you email me your mailing address, I will send a package to you! Oh, and congratulations on expecting. How awesome!

      • Shirlene Baker

Just give me your email address! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Ooooh, I’d love to try the towelettes since I’m always outdoors in the summer!

    • anotherkindofdrew

They are really great. The seal on the package stays closed which is great. You know baby wipes sometimes don’t stay sealed and the wipes dry out? Not LiquidNet.

  • Shannon Rose

I’d love to try Liquid Net!  My kids and I have recently moved into a house and the yard is huge and FULL of misquitos!  We don’t use Deet anymore, just keep putting various concoctions on, trying to find something to ward off being eaten alive.  Toss me a sample, buddy!  :)

This stuff sounds fantastic! Why haven’t I heard of it before?!  I would love to try it and find new safe ways to keep my family safe from nasty chemicals and mosquitoes at the same time!

    • anotherkindofdrew

It is a relatively new product by a relatively new company. Click on the sidebar ad on any of my pages and you will be taken right to their page to see all of their products. Really stand up company, methinks. I enjoy all they do for me and our readers!

  • elvish

I want to try LiquidNet because my own mixtures of witch hazel and various essential oils don’t work for my daughter. We strive to be as chemical-free as is possible in this day and age. This sounds like a great product!

  • Jennifer Meyer

Very cool stuff.  One of the reasons I love this blog is because of the great tid bits you can get on taking care of your fam in an eco-friendly way.
    Thanks!

  • Mauriannew

Cutting any chemicals out of your life is alway good.

  • Sheree Zender

We live in the middle of 17 acres of woodss…we use ALOT of bug spray…and we HATE it….I would love to try this alternative! By the way….let us know how many people are stupid enough to send you their bank account number and PIN….lol!!!!  Good one.

  • Andrea

My husband is allergic to mosquito bites and it limits where we can go on our adventures. His bites swell and hurt and last sometimes weeks even without him touching them. we have tried so many things ive lost count, deet don’t even seem to do any thing, the little vampires just love him. I will be looking for this in our area to try, any ideas on where to look in Oregon? will it just be in natural food stores or pharmacies, outdoor sporting goods places or?….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=42418803 Emily Gonzalez

We sell the product in Home Depot, Lowes, ACE, local garden centers and online at liquidfence.com.  If your husband is especially allergic, he might actually want to give our Liquid Net for Pets a try.  I am especially susceptible to bites and the stronger formula in the pet wipe works better for me.  Email me (emily@liquidfence.com) if you have any other questions or trouble finding it!

  • rachel whetzel

Totally cool!! I need me some this summer. I love my citronella candles, but sometimes it’s not so convenient to carry them all over at family reunion time. lol I need me some of this stuff for sure. Beats the Bounce dryer sheets all the relatives swear by for SURE.

  • Greendaze44

bank account number & PIN? I don’t think so!

  • Khovaki

Mmm…Drew, you should probably remove the request for the personal info, including the PIN! lol Some folks might not get the joke and it doesn’t help your credibility.

Looks like a very interesting product, though. Thanks for the tip.

    • anotherkindofdrew

Thank you for the note. While I completely understand what you are saying, I still think it is funny and would hope that no one would fall for it. No one has yet. As for credibility? Well, I am comfortable with the repercussions of leaving it.

    • anotherkindofdrew

You will notice I did make a NOTE though on that option. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Heather-Phillips-Paul/1412694976 Heather Phillips Paul

It almost did me…I am a newbie here, directed here by a friend, and I had to go check with her….I thought it was a scam…lol

      • anotherkindofdrew

I am sorry you almost did Heather. I would never ask for that sort of information. I have seen it done though and seen people send the info. without asking any questions. I have added a NOTE to that option though.

We’re always on the lookout for new products that are DEET alternatives.  The mosquitoes, black flies, etc. are so bad in the summer that you need repellent to be outdoors but DEET is poison so it’s not something I’ll use lightly (Lord knows I used it enough growing up).  I’d not put it on our kids unless the insects were endangering them somehow.

  • Carrierose2006

I may have missed it..any evidence of effectiveness with ticks or chiggers ?

    • anotherkindofdrew

Actually the product is advertised as a repellent for Mosquitoes, Ticks, Blackflies, and Gnats. I am sorry for indadvertedly leaving that info. out. I personally am move effected by ‘skeeters than anything (although I get at least 2 ticks a week) so I focused on that.

  • Breezy75

Deet seriously irritates my daughter’s skin, and mine also, so usually we are just at the mercy of the bugs and flee indoors, we do use citronella candles…would love to try this!!

  • Kim

Love the idea of an all natural insect repellant.  Looking foward to trying it.

  • Jlynnt6

I bought Liquid Net from this site for my son to take camping July 2011 on Pisgah Mountain, North Carolina.  He and his twelve friends were primitive camping and all shared my sons bottle of Liquid Net.  They thought it worked better than anything they had brought.  I also bought the wipes to lighten his pack when he hikes.  Liquid Net is a good product I will purchase again.

    • anotherkindofdrew

LOVE IT! Proof in the pudding right there. Thank you for speaking up Jlynn!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1393310528 Jennifer Gable Poncavage

we’re always looking for chemical free alternatives to things like sunscreen and bug repellent.  we’d love to give this one a try.

  • Bikers2000

tried off, bullfrog, listerine, skin-so-soft, etc. none works. I am left with benadryl after the “bites”. Would love to try something that might really work.

    • anotherkindofdrew

Then I truly think this is what you should try! And rumor has it we are going to offer a discount code tomorrow!

  • Njtf1

I would love to try Liquid Net since I am a mosquito & tick – magnet. Love working in my garden at sunrise, but holy mosquitoes batman!

  • http://twitter.com/shalommama Nina Nelson

This stuff sounds great! I’d love to try it to keep away mosquitoes, which my body reacts to with a large amount of swelling. Not cool at all. I’ll tell my friends about this, they were just asking me natural ways to fend off bugs. :)

  • Maynekitty

I’d like to try it because we have more mosquitoes than ever this year.  I have tried Cutter Sensations but I am still getting bites even with that.  I prefer to use something w/o DEET so I don’t have to rush inside to wash it off after working in the garden.

  • Kitty
  • Spoiled Forever

I would LOVE to try it.  I have had a problem with mosquitoes from a very early age and I’m tired of swelling up and itching like crazy!  thank you.

  • http://www.scissorsanddrumsticks.com Kevin Gilkes

I never really get hit with too many bugs other than skeeters. On the ankles especially. But, these days we are teaching our kids how to grow their own food and preserve it among many outdoor projects that they get lumped up with bites constantly.

Using this product will allow our outdoor learning adventures carry on.

Thanks for the contest, Drew and Liquid Fence! Great products!

  • Corrie

Lex and I just got back from a week of camping in the Shenandoah Valley with the kids.  I chose to buy this at the camp store because it was all natural but wasn’t sure how great it would work.  I can’t explain how impressed we were.  Not only did it smell FANTASTIC, we were not bothered at all.  Period.  And as a girl who is used to being devoured living on the “swamp” in Bayview, I am not exaggerating as I type this.  Thanks for sharing the love, it really is an effective and SAFE way to keep the critters away while you and yours play!

  • Roadman444

i would like to see how well this product will work around ahorse barn. horse flies are a nusiance to horses and myself. if you’ve ever had the unpleasurable oppotunity of being bitten by a horse fly, you can understand why some horses act up so. mosquitos and other insects are usually handled quite efficient by the barn swallows and bats in the evening time.

    • anotherkindofdrew

I used this all HOT summer long on my hogs and it kept the fleas, flies, and gnats away from them. I was quite impressed. I didn’t have to deal with bloody ears or anything of the sort!

  • Shadow

Liquid Net sounds like it what I have been looking for.  We live in the NH woods with tons of black flies and mosquitoes.  Dislike working in the garden with deet repellants.
